So the story goes like this: The old rulers of Mythodea tried to create new elements, like the Undead Flesh. The NPC was one of them and he searched for a way to undo his creation. Eventually he believed that he had found a way and under the eyes of Earths avatar he sacrificed himself to banish the Undead Flesh. He failed but eventually found peace himself.
